this is old but i still think it's decent so shut up

The sun was finally setting, and for some reason, that illicited a great big sigh from me. I wasn't sure if it was a sigh of exhaustion, or relief. It went without saying that our troubles were far from over, and we were going to continue to be persued no matter what, but this seemed to be a rare moment where we could actually relax and forget about everything.

"Kyon."

It had been an eventful day to say the least, and to be honest, I wouldn't blame my legs if they decided to simply disconnect themselves from my body after all the abuse that's been put upon them in the past 24 hours. The empty train seemed to be a good place to just rest them for a while, taking us to our predetermined destination.

"Kyon!"

When I get back, I need to have a word with that Koizumi. Going to these lengths and arranging for this, while neither of us have any idea what's actually going on.

At that moment, I felt a sharp pain on my cheek. It was being pulled by the girl next to me.

"Kyon! Are you listening to me?"

Now I am.

"Good." She let go of my cheek, sighing. "I'm so tired... what was the deal with those guys anyway? What's going on?"

If I knew that much, I'd tell you.

"Don't give me that. You obviously know a lot more than you're letting on! So spill it."

I grew silent at that. Naturally, I knew a little more than she did, but the fact of the matter was that it wasn't anything I could actually tell her. Not to mention, anything that she would believe to begin with. Hey, Haruhi. You won't believe this, but a secret group of miscreants are planning on taking you away from all of us. My job is to get you as far away as possible. If that sort of thing was easy to say, I would have said it already. For now though, she would have to be kept as in the dark as she possibly could be.

"Sorry. I'll tell you later, if it's possible. For now, just rest up." She didn't seem very thrilled to hear that type of excuse, but what else could I do?

Haruhi sighed. "Fine." A beat passed. "...by the way..."

Before we go any further, I guess we should actually set the foundation for the story. Starting out like that where no one knows what's going on is a good way to build suspense, but it doesn't mean anything unless I go back and explain it. So, let's start with that night. It was 2:30 AM, and I was fast asleep, only to be dragged out by the sound of my phone's ringtone. I hadn't remembered to turn it off, and hearing it was a surprise that jolted me right awake. Damn it... not again.

I answered.

If this isn't Asahina-san, I'm hanging up the phone.

"Oh, my apologies. Would you like me to put her on for you?"

Just as I had thought. It was our serial smiler, Koizumi Itsuki. Well, I couldn't really hang up now, considering I was wide awake.

"I'm sorry for interrupting your sleep, but this matter is urgent. Could you please come to the park right away?"

Where have I heard all this before? "Please, tell me we're not in another time loop."

"I believe that we would be much more content were that the case." I think out of my half-asleep haze I might have pushed the idea out, but something soon became apparent to me. There was an odd sense of urgency in Koizumi's voice. It was hard to imagine that he wasn't trying to keep up his cheerful demeanor throughout the phone call, but the fact of the matter was that if it was enough to bother him, then getting down there would be best. Asahina-san was clearly there, and who knows how she felt right now. And based on those guesses, I'd have to say Nagato would be there too. I don't really have a choice in the matter, do I?

After pedaling to the park as fast as I possibly could, I ran up to them. As expected, Koizumi seemed to be wearing a paper thin smile, Asahina-san was on the verge of tears, and Nagato sat there, her normally stoic look not changing. I locked up my bike in the usual place and ran over, panting. Koizumi greeted me.

"I'm glad you could join us. I suppose I should have told you this on the phone, but coming here could have been dangerous. However, I can see that you were not followed." Thank you for that late warning. If someone is out to kill me, could it hurt for you to tell me in advance before I feel a knife in my back?

Catching my breath, I spoke. "So then-- what's happening this time?"

Koizumi glanced over at Nagato, then to Asahina-san, then to me. "I'm afraid we have a rather rough situation on our hands. Earlier tonight, one of my associates from the Agency happened to notice a peculiar looking young man outside of Asahina-san's house. He was hidden, just not hidden very well."

Asahina-san has a stalker? Well, it's not that that doesn't piss me off, but that doesn't sound that farfetched. Wait, you bastard, why do you have people watching Asahina-san anyway?

"I'm afraid it runs deeper than that. Nagato-san would be able to confirm someone strange near her apartment building. I'm afraid that I wasn't able to notice anyone around my home myself, however there have been reports that it's not unlikely that I'm being watched as well."

I was offset by that. Someone was stalking not only Asahina-san, but Nagato and Koizumi as well? "Wait, you're not telling me..."

"Yes. I'm afraid, you're being observed by our mystery group as well." I know that pause he took was simply for dramatic effect, though his tone changed. "And, I suppose it goes without saying. The one that they've been observing the longest, not just at home but wherever she goes, is none other than Suzumiya-san herself."

That's dangerous stuff they're tampering with. I'm sure that if there were stalkers around, the last person they would want to watch would be Haruhi. If they get caught, I can't picture the type of reprecussions that would come as a result of that. Though, the fact that Koizumi knows that, doesn't that make his Agency the real stalkers here? Exactly how long have they had tabs on us like that? Actually, I think I'm better off not knowing.

"So, what's the problem with that? Doesn't that mean we would just have to fish them out and tell them to cut it out? Dealing with this sort of thing shouldn't be that difficult."

"If only it were that easy," Koizumi sighed, running a hand through his hair. "We had already considered that solution. However, further research was done in order to determine the identity of this new faction that appears to have taken an interest in our SOS Brigade. While they still don't have a particular name, one thing is obvious. They're watching us and just waiting for a moment of vulnerability. A moment to catch us off guard, so it seems."

"And what's that supposed to accomplish?"

"Isn't that obvious? If none of us are keeping a close enough eye on Suzumiya-san, something-- or someone, could possibly happen to her."

Someone? What are you trying to say, Koizumi? No one would be stupid enough to go after that girl; if she tried hard enough, she could possibly overpower any average person with ease.

"I believe you just gave yourself your answer. Suzumiya-san is a lively young woman, and quite possibly could defend herself against any average person. However, if the person wasn't in fact, average, then she could be in great danger, especially if they want to capture her alive." Koizumi's gaze seemed to go further than me, possibly further than the street, before he closed his eyes and shrugged. "Unfortunately, I already have my hands tied. While I could potentially watch over Suzumiya-san, the Organization is ordering me to do research into this new faction." His eyes moved to look at Asahina-san.

"U-Um..." The SOS Brigade's mascot softly and shyly began, "I can't follow Suzumiya-san either..."

Why is that?

"That's classified... I'm sorry, Kyon-kun." Poor Asahina-san looked so downtrotten, as if she were disappointing me. Don't worry! A normal person could barely keep tabs on Haruhi, you don't have to feel bad about it.

"Actually," Koizumi snatched my attention away from her, "That's what I wanted to talk to you about. Asahina-san and I would be unable to watch over Suzumiya-san, and it would be odd for Nagato-san to follow her around." Well, he has a point there. If Nagato were to follow anyone around, it would be odd no matter what. Wait a second, I think I see where this is going. "That is why we would like to request that for now, you please do your best to watch over Suzumiya-san in our place for now."

And there you have it.

"Okay, Koizumi. Here's my answer. Just how in the world do you expect me to do that?"

"I have a few ideas. Please, allow me to enlighten you."
